Understanding Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal Cancer is a type of cancer which affects the esophagus (gullet) – the long tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. It mainly affects people in their 60s and 70s and is more common in men than women.

The exact cause of Esophageal Cancer is unknown, but the following things can increase the risk: smoking, too much alcohol over a long period of time, having an unhealthy diet that’s low in fruits and vegetables and being overweight or obese.

Most Common Symptoms

Esophageal Cancer doesn’t usually cause any symptoms in the early stages when the tumour is small. It’s only when it gets bigger that symptoms tend to develop.

Symptoms of Esophageal cancer can include: bringing up food soon after eating, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite and weight loss, persistent indigestion and pain or discomfort in the upper tummy, chest or back.
