Understanding Mouth Cancer

Mouth Cancer, which is also known as Oral Cancer, is defined as the uncontrollable growth of cells (tumours) that invade and cause damage to surrounding tissue. The tumours may be on the surface of the tongues, the insides of the cheeks, the roof of the mouth or the lips or the gums.

Most cases of Mouth Cancer occur in older adults aged 50 to 74. The illness is often influenced by certain factors such as: smoking or using other forms of tobacco, the drinking of alcohol and an infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Most Common Symptoms

The symptoms of Mouth Cancer could include: sore mouth ulcers that don’t heal within several weeks, unexplained persistent lumps in the mouth and/or neck that don’t go away, strange numbness or odd feeling on the lip or tongue, changes in speech such as a lisp and sometimes white or red patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue.
